City Council Moves Forward with Nikka Yuko Capital Investment Project

On behalf of the Lethbridge & District Japanese Garden Society, we extend our thanks to City Council for voting to continue moving forward with the Capital Improvement Project to construct a new community facility at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. The Society Board has been working hard for the past six years to develop a year-round facility that will benefit both the Garden and Henderson Lake users. This new building will allow us to continue to grow our programming and operations which will present the opportunity of generating increased revenue and being less weather reliant. We are pleased to see this hard work result in a positive outcome for Nikka Yuko and our community.

The Society Board acknowledges City Council made this decision in the face of a difficult time in our history. We will do all that we can to honour the City’s decision and make the Garden the best it can be once people are able to return to public life and gather in a beautiful setting.

We are incredibly appreciative of the overwhelming support we have received from our community members and garden supporters from around the world who wrote letters, made phone calls, showed up to council meetings, and advocated on behalf of Nikka Yuko. We continue to say that our Garden is authentic because “it represents the community that nurtures it.” This decision shows that City Council supports that the purpose of the garden is for our community to enjoy and the engagement has proven wonderful results.

We are excited to continue with our plans and we look forward to welcoming the community to our new facility in 2021!
