Peace, Tranquility and a Japanese Cultural Experience

Nikka Yuko is an easily accessible, safe haven from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From the first apple blossom in spring to the final autumn leaf, Nikka Yuko is an oasis of tranquility. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature in a serene setting, listen to the soothing ripple of the stream, the breeze rustling in the leaves and feel the stress slipping from their bodies and minds.  Nikka Yuko personifies healthy living as visitors leave relaxed and refreshed.  Additionally, exhibits, programs, festivals and events enrich many lives annually by increasing cultural awareness.

The goal of the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is to continue to make a difference in the lives of our visitors.  Your support will make it possible for us to continue to bring special events and exhibits to our visitors.

Sponsorship

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is visited every summer by clients of Lethbridge’s social service agencies. The beauty, peace and tranquility of Nikka Yuko promotes better physical and mental health for their elderly or handicapped clients. There are many more agencies that would like to make Nikka Yuko part of their programming. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, they are unable to do so.

With this in mind, a program was created to distribute Family or Individual Lethbridge & District Japanese Garden Society Membership or Day Passes to various social service agencies. Your involvement can be as simple as deciding the amount of support you wish to provide and sending in a cheque clearly marked “Sponsorship Program”. We will take care of the details. For other options contact information is provided below.

Volunteers

Nikka Yuko cannot exist without the support of numerous volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are as follows:

Tour Guide/Host/Cultural Interpreter Volunteers greet visitors and may provide tours of the Garden. A script and training will be provided to ensure the volunteer is familiar with garden history, plants/trees/shrubs and structures.

Gardening Assistant Volunteers perform routine gardening tasks that allow the groundskeepers to concentrate on their particular specialties. Duties may vary, but the primary tasks are fine weeding, raking and light maintenance. Gardening assistants do not handle any gardening equipment outside what is needed to perform the aforementioned tasks.

Musicians Volunteers perform at Special Events or on weekends and play traditional Japanese musical instruments such as the Koto, Okinawa banjo, Taiko drums, Shakuhachi bamboo flute or other instrument conducive to peace, tranquility and relaxation such as flute, violin, harp, cello, etc.

Japanese Tea Ceremony Practitioner Volunteers perform and/or provides lessons in a Japanese Tea ceremony on weekends or at Special Events.

Artist or Performer Volunteers demonstrate and/or provides lessons in various Japanese art forms on weekends or at Special Events.
